Some Sustainability Numbers
SUSTAINABILITY is one of our Twelve Guiding Principles and we take it very seriously!

Descendants Day 2024
On April 7, 2024, descendants from those who are buried in Western Heights Cemetery gathered for a celebration and group photo.

Memorial Plaza Dedication
On November 2nd, 2024, the Western Heights Cemetery Memorial Plaza was dedicated. Thank you to everyone who purchased bricks as well as those who helped with the installation!

Veteran’s Day 2024
On Veteran’s Day, flags were placed on the graves of the 16 known veteran’s graves at Western Height’s Cemetery, along with a Living Biography of Veterans tour. NBC 5 DFW covered the observance with a wonderful story.

12 Month Update
In the first 12 months, we have logged approximately 2,000 volunteer hours. Half of those were spent on the physical landscape and the other half was spent on historical research.
The Miraculous Monarch Migration
Most of us have seen impressive footage of the Great African Migration in Tanzania and Kenya with vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and antelope which move over distances of up to 1,000 miles as the seasons fluctuate between rainy and dry. Another of the world's truly great migrations takes place in North America, but it is so big, and the individuals are so small, it is impossible to see large portions of it at once -- the many millions of monarch butterflies every autumn.

Sir Van Johnson’s 9-month update on Western Heights Cemetery Restoration Progress
Yesterday, I asked Van Johnson what has been accomplished at the Western Heights Cemetery since joining the Constellation of Living Memorials two-year pilot program nine months ago.

My Ode to Van, Our Awesome Man
I first met Van Johnson at the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group's (FWADG) 20th Anniversary party. He had been one of our founding Board members, holding the position of Environmental Chair. I was immediately charmed and enchanted by him and accepted his invitation to take the famous yard tour of his home in Stevens Park Village. Once I realized how eco-friendly and sustainable it was, I invited him to tour my own home, recognized in 2010 as the first green-built house in the City of Dallas. We were both evidently very close kin to Mother Nature!

Getting Started at Western Heights Cemetery
Below is an update on progress at the historic Western Heights Cemetery -- burial place of Clyde Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde and some of Dallas' early pioneers -- which has been "adopted" by the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group.
Through the Constellation of Living Memorials 2-year pilot program, a grant of $3,750 has been received from the Texas Historical Foundation to create a native pollinator habitat. An equal matching amount must be raised so in total there will be a budget of $7,500 for a native landscape restoration for the 2 acre cemetery.
